It was 2015, in Providence, RI at a community open mic called MADCAP. Madcap was home to many a wandering artist in the local scene, and we (Amanda, Nicole, and Beth) found ourselves, week after week, admiring each other's solo vocal work. Scratch that, we were pretty much all obsessed with each other's voices. It only made sense to come together and learn a three part harmony cover tune for the open mic, so we did. We gathered at Beth's tiny apartment on Federal Hill, harmonized on Paramore's "Hate to See your Heart Break", and almost instantly started giggling. The magic that took over that little space was palpable when our voices blended, and while we could have chalked it up to the margaritas we were drinking, we decided that there was a rare special musical potential that all of us wanted to explore. We started practicing regularly, first learning covers, then exploring songwriting with each other.
Originally known as "The Fates" (get it? mythology? three women?), we learned after a year or two that we did not have the most original band name, as about three other "The Fates" bands already existed. Oops. In the interest of at least attempting to be unique, and anticipating the release of our first album, in 2017 we made a name shift. Luckily we had attended an incredible community arts festival when we first started practicing, AS220 Foo Fest. A young comic book artist at the Providence Comics Consortium kiosk offered us a suggestion, complete with a sketch. The name stuck. Fast forward to months before our album release and we officially became How's About Charlie.
We loved the easy sound of our vocal trio mixed with simple guitar and ukulele instrumentation, but after recording our first album and hearing the potential of consistent percussion energizing our sound, we knew it was time to expand. Fortunately, percussionist extraordinaire Aaron Bedard of The Stupid Robots shared a gig with us in early 2018 and dug our sound. When we asked him to join us for a few gigs, he agreed (thank god), and those few gigs turned into a permanent spot. Aaron seamlessly captures the vibe of our indie folk lullaby sway style, and we've been clinging to him ever since.
Now a four piece bunch of best pals, we have expanded past lil' rhody and are eager to reach more beautiful ears, see more stages whether tiny or huge, and meet new friends. For whatever ridiculous reason, Beth and Amanda both decided to attend grad school in Northampton and Boston respectively, but that isn't stopping our love of writing, performing, and hanging out with each other. Now booking gigs across New England and beyond, we are growing and learning and smiling. Hope to see you smile with us soon 😊.
